Parks Visited: Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater. Tanzania has two safari circuits, and each one of them, in its own right, would make Tanzania a top wildlife destination. The popular Northern circuit with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the best classical safaris in Africa.

Day 1 Arusha – Tarangire National ParkWe will collect you from your hotel/lodge in Arusha and following a 3 hours 8 min (139.7 km), you will arrive at the Tarangire National Park. In this region, Hemingway often went on big game hunting safaris. After the formation of the national parks in 1970, they turned the seasonal marshes and the endless savannah that one sees today into, once again, profitable hunting grounds. Today however, cameras thankfully have replaced the elephant guns. Tarangire National Park has the highest density of elephants in North Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round, in which the herds often can reach an impressive number of 300 animals. The Tarangire River has water all year round also and during the dry season, between July and October, many animals from the surrounding areas come to the river for drinking. If you visit the park during the dry season, you will witness an unforgettable natural wonder as you can observe wonderful creatures such as lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests and zebras as well as various types of antelopes and gazelles and with a little luck, you can also spot a python! This area is also a haven for bird watchers during the dry season, with over 550 different species including the Maasai Ostrich -the world largest bird. Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic place before the afternoon is dedicated to more wildlife watching.

Leaving the highlands behind, you descend into the heart of wild Africa; into the Serengeti National Park with its endless plains rolling in the distance as far as the eye can see. You will head to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park. The Seronera River provides a valuable water source to this area of the park and attracts wildlife well represented of most of the Serengeti species.

Return to your accommodation for a welcome rest. The Serengeti covers an area of 14,763 sq. km. It is the largest national park in Tanzania. The park is located about 320 km north-west of Arusha, lying in a high plateau between the Ngorongoro highlands and the Kenyan-Tanzanian border, and extending almost to Lake Victoria to the west.

Animals tend to be more active in the morning before the temperatures soar around midday. After lunch, you will leave the plains of the Serengeti and travel to the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will overnight directly on the Ngorongoro Crater’s edge with a view over the collapsed volcano. It is a perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner at sunset.

Day 5 Ngorongoro Crater Tour - ArushaAfter breakfast we descend to the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a game drive with lunch at the hippo pool picnic site. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers an area of 8,300 sq. km, with a deep volcanic crater at its center, the largest unbroken caldera in the world. The crater is undoubtedly the ‘jewel in the crown’ - an area that is about 300 sq. km in area, 600 meters deep and 20 km wide. The rim of the crater is an astounding 2,286 meters above sea level. The floor contains a small soda lake and it is estimated that around 30,000 animals live in the crater, making it the most intensive safari wildlife viewing area on earth. Late afternoon we ascend to the rim and drive straight to Arusha.
Meal plan: Breakfast at the lodge. Picnic lunch inside the Ngorongoro Crater
